Dynamic CO2 sorption on MgO-based sorbent in the presence of CO and H2O at elevated pressures

The presence of gas species other than the target adsorbate in practical conditions causes complications implementing a sorption-based process because synergistic or detrimental effects on sorption mechanism. MgO-based sorbents have attracted massive attention for pre-combustion CO2 capture, where H2O and CO co-exist emission gas. Although has been reported to greatly enhance kinetics, behavior mechanism under large quantity as condition remain unclear. Furthermore, not adequately examined. Here, dynamic sorbent was understood by coupling breakthrough experiment practically relevant with situ DRIFTS results. At elevated pressures, performance considerably enhanced, whereas influence temperatures insignificant. In addition, enhanced kinetics initial sorbent, hindered them. analyses study revealed that OH groups generated from dissociation created highly basic sites promoted formation monodentate carbonate, thereby enhancing sorption. contrast, hampered through two mechanisms: (1) competitive between water–gas shift reaction feed; (2) interference molten nitrate salts. This demonstrated capture significantly alters MgO, providing insights ultimate implementation sorbents.
